This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Smoker’s Helpline (SHL), a free, confidential service that offers information, tools and a support community to help people quit smoking and vaping.
Thanks to gifts like yours to Help a Smoker Quit, over the last 20 years more than 120,000 people in Canada have registered on SmokersHelpline.ca
and 400,000 calls from people like Mark (pictured above) have been answered.
Mark had already quit once, but after an accident at work, he fell back into smoking to help him cope. He was ready to quit for good. He knew he had the strength, but needed the support to do it again.
Thanks to your donation, support is exactly what Mark found when he connected with the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS). Mark began working with a Quit Coach named Sarah, and the two spoke over the phone weekly for 10 months to support Mark on his journey to quitting.
“Sarah’s support was marvelous,” says Mark. “There was nothing easy about quitting, but after talking to Sarah, I always felt strong enough to push back against the cravings.”
Now smoke-free for eight months, Mark can already feel his health improving. “Thank you to the donors who help make CCS support and cancer prevention programs possible. Thanks to you, I can now take a breath of fresh air or a bite of food, and truly appreciate it.”
Your support also helps CCS achieve progress in tobacco control and recent advocacy wins such as increases in tobacco taxes, and proposed federal regulations to require a health warning on every cigarette. CCS also advocates to reduce youth e-cigarette use by making it harder to purchase e-cigarettes, less appealing, and more expensive.Join us and be a Voice for Change in cancer care.
